Patriot Quote

"It is of great importance to set a resolution, not to be shaken, never to tell an untruth. There is no vice so mean, so pitiful, so contemptible; and he who permits himself to tell a lie once, finds it much easier to do it a second and a third time, till at length it becomes habitual; he tells lies without attending to it, and truths without the world's believing him. This falsehood of the tongue leads to that of the heart, and in time depraves all its good disposition."

Thomas Jefferson, letter to Peter Carr, 1785

BETRAYED by EIGHT...SAVED by 100?

1. I'm sure by now you have heard how 8 Republicans helped pass the Cap and Trade Bill in the House of Representatives.  If these eight Republicans had not supported the bill, it would have failed 211 - 212.  Of course, because we have not passed the "Read the ENTIRE Bill Act" yet, it is safe to assume that many of those who voted for or against the bill did not read the 1,200 page document before voting!

What you may not know are some of the reasons this bill is an alarmingly bad bill.  Here are some stats and facts from the Heritage Foundation.

The Heritage Foundation’s Center for Data Analysis found that by 2035 gasoline prices would increase 58 percent, natural gas prices would increase 55 percent, home heating oil would increase 56 percent, and worst of all, electricity prices would jump 90 percent.

But the direct tax on household energy use is just the beginning. The energy tax also hits producers. As the higher production costs ripple through the economy, the household pocketbooks get hit again and again. When all the tax impacts have been added up, the average per-family-of-four costs rise by $2,979 per year. In the year 2035 alone, the cost is $4,609. And the costs per family for the whole energy tax aggregated from 2012 to 2035 are $71,493.

Now remind me again?  Why does ANYONE think this is a suitable bill to endorse?

While our elected officials on the House of Representative side obviously have forgotten who they represent, we may have a much better chance on the Senate side of killing this bill once and for all.  According to Business and Media.org, Senator Inhofe (OK) stated in a recent interview,

I want to tell you what’s going to happen from this point forward in my opinion  [....] First of all, the House will pass anything. Nancy Pelosi has the votes to pass anything. Don’t be distressed when you see the House passes some kind of cap-and-trade bill. And you know it could be worse [than the proposed bill] and she could still pass it, so it’ll pass there.

[...] While the House will pass the bill ... in the Senate, they’re not going to be able to pass it [...]. You guys – it’s just not going to happen. Now we have a history of what’s happened in the Senate. We had the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. Remember that’s where we passed by a 94-1, I think it was, saying we don’t want to ratify any treaty – the Senate doesn’t – that doesn’t include developing nations with developed nations. Well, that stuck with us.

Inhofe explained that in 2003 and 2005, he was able to nearly single-handedly take down a bill sponsored by Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Joseph Liebermann, I-Conn., which would have set a cap-and-trade system in place.

Yet, with very popular people, like McCain and Liebermann coming up in ’03 and then again in ’05 – the reason I’m going to tell you that they don’t have the votes, it’s not going to pass is that in ’05, that’s when I was on the floor for eight hours a day, five days, or about 10 hours a days, 50 hours – is that only two senators would come to the floor that would help me with this because I was taking on McCain and Liebermann on this silly issue.

But, in 2008 with a similar bill sponsored by Sens. Liebermann and John Warner, R-Va., he had gained significant support compared to his 2003 and 2005 efforts, showing a trend that passage of this type of bill is becoming increasingly more difficult.

And you fast forward to one year ago today, 2008 – Warner-Liebermann, [...] It didn’t take five days, it took two days – 23 senators came down to help me out on this issue, because I told [California Democratic Sen.] Barbara Boxer to you know, get over it, get a life. You lost, we won.

Photo Credit: Senate.govThank God we still have representatives with some common sense like Senator Inhofe who are diligently working on the American people's behalf.  So let's watch what the Senate does and let's hope that even though

It will pass in the House, in the Senate it will not pass [...].

If you have a moment, perhaps you could send an email to Senator Inhofe and our other Senatorial representatives and thank them for doing what is right!  I'm am not happy to have been betrayed by eight, but I am looking forward to being saved by 100!

Remaining Steadfast,

The Waxman Markey Cap and Trade bill passed by a narrow margin tonight, 219 to 212 with 8 Republicans supporting and 44 Democrats voting against, hardly overwhelming support. So, one of the largest tax revenue generating bills in history passed the House of Representatives on a 7 point margin in a 435-seat chamber. I just did a post on the eight Republicans before I came here!
I hope that Senator Inhofe is correct and that this bill has no chance of passing the senate, I feel a little better now. I thought that our best chance to stop this bill was in the house, I hope that I was wrong.

If the cap and trade bill passes the Senate, it will be over Inhofe's dead body. He will fight this with everything he has. If they shove it past him, no doubt it will be whittled down to where it may not hurt Americans like the version passed by Pelosi and crew.

Larry - I am so thankful we have someone like Inhofe in our corner. I read an article today on healthcare that made me want to throw up. These bills are so deceptive. If the American people only knew what was really going on behind the scenes and the motivation for these bills, it would make them angry!

You are right, Dominique. There is so much going on behind the scenes that we may never know about.

It may get worse now, with the Democrats having a 60 vote, filibuster proof majority in the Senate.

Larry - I know - 60 - ugh! And a comedian to boot! Of course he kinda of makes sense in an odd kind of way when you think about it because all these tactics are comic! (In a bad sense)...
